Practical Strategies for Web Accessible and Environmentally Sustainable Digital Projects

Event Series (See All)

August 7, 2026 9:30 am 4:30 pm Eastern Time

As digital editions and archives continue to grow in scale and reach, project teams are increasingly considering how to create resources that are both accessible to diverse audiences and environmentally sustainable. These goals are frequently interconnected: decisions that improve usability, clarity, and efficiency can also reduce the energy and resources required to deliver digital content. At the same time, evolving accessibility requirements and forthcoming compliance deadlines are making accessibility planning an increasingly important consideration for digital humanities and cultural heritage projects.

On August 7, in a full-day workshop for the eLabs conference Revolutions and Reflections, Erica Cavanaugh will draw on her experience in conceptualizing digital editions and building their publishing platforms to guide participants through practical strategies for improving the accessibility and sustainability of their websites and digital resources. Topics will include planning for accessibility in your site’s visual design and navigation, optimizing image and media resources to reduce unnecessary data transfer, selecting sustainable hosting and technology solutions, and more. The in-person workshop will also introduce tools and methods for assessing web accessibility and measuring the environmental impacts of digital projects.

Designed for practitioners at all levels of technical expertise, the workshop emphasizes actionable strategies that can be incorporated into both new and existing projects. By the end of the session, participants will have a stronger understanding of how accessibility and sustainability intersect, how emerging accessibility requirements may affect their work, and how to make informed decisions that support more inclusive, responsible, and resilient digital projects.

Please note that registration for this event will open when the registration for the conference opens in late June.
